» CarPlay
iOS in your car. Steven Sinofsky’s bullish on it.
Lots to play out, but there’s a good chance Apple’s approach to in-car electronics could totally disrupt the notion of $5K option pkgs.
» That’s one dead canary
The New York Times:
In the biggest shuffling of Microsoft’s executive ranks since the company’s new chief executive, Satya Nadella, took over, Mark Penn, the former aide to the Clinton family, is becoming the company’s chief strategy officer.
Say, how’d the last thing he was chief strategist for turn out?
Also, he’s the one who came up with Scroogled? Makes sense considering his advice for Hillary Clinton.
Well… good luck with that.
ADDED: Writing for Re/code, Kara Swisher has a different take on this:
Apparently, Penn will get more strategery duties — if you spin it one way for the controversial former political operative, it is a promotion and if you spin it another, it’s a demotion. In the new set-up, he will apparently look at new product areas and strategic investments for Microsoft. So, overall, it seems like a pretty lateral move to me, but with less teeth (and Penn can sure bite!).
Yes, he sure does bite. Big time.
» Tim Cook fills his boots
The Mac Observer reports on a confrontation between a conservative shareholder group and Tim Cook at Apple’s shareholder meeting. The group considers Apple’s sustainability programs to be contrary to the bottom line.
“When we work on making our devices accessible by the blind,” he said, “I don’t consider the bloody ROI.”
Good for him.
» The wrong question
Ben Bajarin on the faux question of whether or not you can do “real work” with a tablet, a question I’m really getting tired of:
I firmly believe my iPad is a better web browsing tool than my PC. I believe it is a better entertainment device for games, watching movies, and TV shows. I personally believe it is a better art studio. With all the use cases we can list for our smart devices, the central issue keeps coming back to what do you want to do with it.
Of course you can do “real work” on a tablet. Can it do everything a laptop can do? No. Can it do things a laptop can’t do? Yes.
» Whither Mark Penn?
Kara Swisher at Re/code:
Of all the many executives on the Microsoft “Senior Leadership Team,
Like Ben Thompson, I consider Mark Penn a canary in the Nadella era Microsoft coal mine. If he stays, the mine is full of noxious gas.
» ‘Apple isn’t dead yet’
Good to know. Thanks for this late-breaking information.
» Minecraft, the movie
Mojang’s Markus Persson (aka “Notch”) says they’re in talks with Warner Brothers.
It’ll be two hours of digging for diamonds and then falling into lava right after you get them.

» Squeezing Office
Benedict Evans looks at the default templates for Excel worksheets and asks:
How many of these are actually smartphone or tablet apps providing custom lists or databases? Or Mint (another SAAS)? How many presentation templates might also be something like Storehouse?
This is, of course, all about unbundling and specialisation.
You want to know how I know Office isn’t as critical as it used to be? Because iOS devices continue to do well in the enterprise.
» Google lobbies against ‘Don’t drive and Glass’ legislation
If you’re using Glass for navigation, I can see how it might not be any worse than having a GPS. The problem is you can’t tell if someone’s doing that or watching their shows. I see people texting and driving all the time even when there’s legislation against it and it makes me crazy (well, that and the head injury I had as a child).
Google’s defense, however, is classic double talk.
Google’s main point to legislators is that regulation would be premature because Google Glass is not yet widely available, the state elected officials say.
Please! Please! Can’t we all agree that it is better to close the barn door after the cows have all escaped? I mean, come on. That’s just common sense.

This week’s episode of Turning This Car Around, America’s most award-eligible podcast on fatherhood, examines getting ready in the morning. How hard could it be?
Uhnnnn…
