» Windows 8 to launch on October 25th

Mary Jo Foley:

Microsoft is making Windows 8 — and Surface RT, its first tablet running the Windows RT on ARM version of the product — available commercially on October 26.

Hey! A date! Wonder when they’re going to announce pricing.

Oh, well, no rush! It’s over a month from now!

» Acer cancels smartphone launch with Alibaba

Reuters (via Daring Fireball):

A planned launch of a smartphone between Acer Inc and a unit of Alibaba Group, China’s biggest e-commerce firm, was canceled on Thursday due to what Alibaba said was pressure from Google Inc on the Taiwanese group.

So, my only question is who will the boycott Apple people buy phones from now?

I can kind of understand if you think Apple was wrong to sue Samsung. What I can’t understand is how myopic you have to be to think that Google is as pure as the driven snow.

The boring iPhone 5

MacRumors: Apple’s iPhone 5 Pre-order Shipping Estimates Slip to Two Weeks

I guess this is what happens when people are actually able to pre-order the phone. Last year I futzed with the web site for hours before giving up and going to bed and only was able to order my wife a 4S on the phone with AT&T the next day.  Last night I had ordered myself an iPhone 5 via the iOS Apple Store app 15 minutes after midnight when pre-orders began.

You can say that shipping dates slipping is a meaningless statistic without knowing how many phones Apple made available, but it’s at least an indicator that the boringest phone in the history of like forever is doing pretty well. It certainly seems likely that Apple would have increased production in the last year rather than decreased or held it steady, but we’ll have to wait until they announce numbers to know just how well it’s selling.

Personally, I’m very excited to get this phone. Other than the introduction of the original iPhone, this is arguably the biggest update.  My understanding from people who’ve held an iPhone 5 is that the build quality is even better than the 4 and 4S, if that’s possible. Eventually Apple will just make phones out of unicorn horn and the dewy moisture that collects between Scarlett Johansson’s breasts when she does hot yoga. (Technically, any yoga done by Scarlett Johansson is “hot yoga” but I’m specifically talking about Bikram in this case.) The white one will feature the same moisture collected from Michael Fassbender.

The only feature I’ve ever envied about some Android phones is their thinness. And now even that slight envy will be gone. If you find the iPhone 5 boring, don’t get one. I’m sure someone else more excited by it would be glad to have it.

» Ping, we hardly knew ye

No, seriously, what were you again?

Two fifty?

The iPod Touch line now starts at $200 for a 16 GB prior generation model. Does that mean an iPad Mini would have to start at $250 for 16 GB? Would Apple ship an 8 GB model for $200? Might they change the pricing structure in a month assuming the rumors of its imminent arrival are correct? What’s with all the untucked shirts?

All I can say is, if your iPhone 5 review doesn’t mention what a ripoff of the Goophone i5 it is, we’re going to have words, blogger.

» Verizon launches anti-malware app for Android

The Verge:

Verizon has introduced a McAfee-based Mobile Security app for its line of Android devices, with prices ranging from free to $1.99 a month.

You won’t get that in Apple’s walled garden. Advantage: Android.

A void

So, we know where Microsoft is going to put pop-up stores over the holiday so you can, uh, buy your loved ones Surfaces, but we don’t know when the Surface will be released or how much it’ll cost.

Meanwhile, we also have no idea when Windows Phone 8 and, therefore, the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 are coming (rumors are it’ll be November).

Back in grade school, there was a kid who would spend the entire class shuffling through his folder insisting “I did the homework. I know I did it.” only to admit at the end of class that he had not, in fact, done the homework.

I don’t know why I’m relating that particular anecdote right now.
