» Sizing up the iPad mini
John Gruber:
I am not trying to review a device that I not only haven’t seen, but which I don’t even know will ever actually ship. Maybe Apple ships this thing and it’s terrible, everything is too hard to tap and too small to read. I don’t know. I’m just saying, if you look at the math and play around with rotated iPad screenshots to reduce their size, it seems like it could work, even if it’s not ideal.
A few weeks back I was running this iPad mini idea through my head and couldn’t get past the sizing. “It’ll never work!” I thought. “Developers will have to recode everything! It’s untenable! Impossible! Where is MacMillan with my martini?!”
I had just bought my son the second LEGO Harry Potter game for iOS and thought it was a perfect example of what I was thinking. “This would be really hard to play on a screen half the size of the iPad.”
“And where the hell is MacMillan?!”
Then all of a sudden it occurred to me that the same game plays on the iPhone. So I fired it up on the iPhone and started to play it.
And you know what? I had no problems even though the icons you have to hit to cast spells are tiny in comparison to their iPad counterparts.
Huh.
Also, about the same moment, I realized I don’t have a butler named MacMillan.
The things you learn, huh?
